A visiting Priest was attending a men’s breakfast in Ohio farm country. He asked one of the impressive older farmers in attendance to say grace that morning. After all were seated, the older farmer began:
“Lord, I hate buttermilk.” The Priest opened one eye and wondered to himself where this was going.
Then the farmer loudly proclaimed, “Lord, I hate lard.”
Now the Priest was overly worried. However without missing a beat, the farmer prayed on,
“And Lord, you know I don’t care much for raw white flour.”
Just as the Priest was ready to stand and stop everything, the farmer continued, “But Lord, when you mix ‘em all together and bake ‘em up, I do love fresh biscuits.”
“So Lord, when things come up we don’t like, when life gets hard, when we just don’t understand what you are sayin’ to us, we just need to relax and wait ‘till You are done mixin’, and probably it will be somethin’ even better than biscuits.” Amen | 오하이오주 농가에서 있은 성인남성 조찬에 성직자 한 분이 참석하고 있었다. 그날 아침 식사 기도로 한 나이든 농부에게 감사 기도해 주기를 그는 부탁했다. 다들 자리에 앉은 뒤에 노인장 농부는 기도를 시작했다.
"주님 전 버터밀크(우유)가 싫습니다." 사제는 한 눈을 벙긋 뜨고 이게 어찌 되고 있는지 궁금해했다.
그런데 농부는 또 큰 소리로 "주님, 저는 돼지기름덩이도 싫습니다."라고 선언했다.
이제 사제는 더없이 걱정되었다. 그러나 한치도 놓치지 않고, 농부는 기도를 계속했다,
"그런데 주님, 하얀 생 밀가루도 저는 별로라고 생각 않습니다요."
사제가 일어서서 모든 것을 멈추려는데 농부는 계속해서, "하지만 주님, 그 모든 것들을 함께 섞어서 구워내는 신선한 비스킷을 저는 좋아합니다요."
"그러니 주님, 저희가 좋아 않는 일이 생기면, 우리 삶이 어려워 지면, 주님이 우리에게 하시는 말씀을 저희가 잘 이해하지 못할 때, 저희는그저 편하게 안심하고 주님이 섞으시는 일을 끝내실 때까지 기다리면, 아마도 결과는 비스킷보다 더 좋은 것이 될 것이겠지요."
